Christian holidays

  •  Christmas Eve - in many families, Christmas Eve marks the start of Christmas celebrations, as family members travel to be together, and perhaps some Christmas gifts are opened.  Since ancestral spirits visited during the Christmas season, it was thought to be a favorable time for divining. In old England, a girl might bake a cake on Christmas Eve, marking it with her initials before leaving it on the hearth. The initials of her future husband would be added under hers before the next morning.      A different type of Christmas love charm involved the use of a rose that an unmarried girl had picked on Midsummer Day, then kept in white paper until Christmas eve. She would then wear the rose to church, where her future husband would approach and take it from her!
