- St. Mark's Eve - a young lady can divine her future husband on the eve of St. Mark's Day by eating a hard boiled dove's egg, sprinkled with salt, prior to retiring to bed for the night; she
should also place a Tulip, sacred to St. Mark, in a vase next to the bed; she would then dream of the man she would marry. Poor Robin's Almanack (1770):
On St. Mark's Eve, at twelve o'clock,
The fair maid will watch her smock,
To find her husband in the dark,
By praying unto good St. Mark.
Girls would also place nuts on the hearthstone on St. Mark's Eve, assigning each the name of a potential suitor and chanting the rhyme: "If you love me, pop and fly; If not lie there
silently."
Cowslip flowers, in bloom by St. Mark's Day, have long been used as an aid to beauty, and could even "...comfort the heart" (William Turner, Herbal, 1568).
